Cogmed New Zealand
Focus. Learn. Get things done.
Cogmed is a structured, coach-supported training program for working memory and attention, developed by neuroscientists at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and studied in randomised controlled trials.
Is working memory the missing piece?
Working memory is what lets you hold information in mind long enough to use it, following instructions, doing mental maths, staying on track mid-task. When it’s stretched too thin, it can look like:
Losing track of multi-step instructions
Starting tasks but struggling to stay organised through to the end
Trouble with mental maths or holding a thought while doing something else
Difficulty staying focused, especially on less interesting tasks
Cogmed has been studied in children, teens and adults, including those with ADHD, and those recovering from stroke, brain injury or cancer treatment.

Backed by research, not just marketing
Cogmed was developed at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and has been studied in randomised controlled trials across children, teens, adults and older adults, including people with ADHD, and people recovering from stroke, brain injury or cancer treatment.
Adults, ages 20-70
A double-blind randomised trial found improvements in working memory and sustained attention, maintained at 3-month follow-up.
Brehmer, Westerberg & Backman, 2012, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience
Children with ADHD
A controlled trial (ages 7-17) found improvements in inattention, organisation and working memory, reported by parents and teachers.
Beck et al., 2010, Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology
School-aged children
A University of Cambridge study of 72 students found working memory gains linked to greater academic progress in maths and English over the school year.
Also studied in preschoolers, childhood cancer survivors, and adults recovering from stroke or brain injury.

Cogmed FAQs
What age is Cogmed suitable for?
This program is generally suitable for students in Prep (Pre-Primary / Reception) and above. Suitability will depend on skill level. If you are unsure about your child’s suitability for the program please book a free professional consult.
What does it look like?
Check out our Cogmed demo video to see what the exercises are like.
Is Cogmed backed by research?
This is an important consideration when choosing a learning intervention. Cogmed is one of the most highly researched programs out there – check out more on the research page.
Will this program also improve reading skills?
While working memory is necessary for reading and comprehension, Cogmed is designed to target working memory and attention capacity directly; it does not teach reading mechanics. You can explore our targeted reading interventions here.
When does the course begin and end?
Your course will begin on your first training day and end once you have finished all the Cogmed content (6 – 14 weeks depending on your chosen protocol). Your program coach will provide 6 coaching calls, spread out across your course. If you miss sessions and run out of coaching calls before you’ve finished Cogmed, you will be able to complete the course in your own time.
How long will I need to complete the program?
You’ll need 6 – 14 weeks depending on your chosen protocol (25 or 35 minutes per day, 3 – 5 days per week).
What technology do I need?
Cogmed can be used on most Windows and Mac computers as well as iPads and some newer Android tablets. It is accessed through your internet browser (we recommend Google Chrome browser). Headphones are recommended to help you concentrate (we recommend stereo headphones that cover the whole ear, such as these ones from Altronics). Parents monitoring their children should use a headphone double adaptor so they can also hear the sound.
How do I enrol?
You can either enrol online below, or discuss the program further and/or enrol over the phone.
